My Lesson from Dr. Seuss

Yesterday, I wanted to whip up some cute little Cat in the Hat hats as a treat that my kids could have for Dr. Seuss' birthday today.  Unfortunately, they didn't turn out as I'd planned.  Instead of grumbling and in true Dr. Seuss fashion, I decided to look for the positive in my decorating fail!

So, presented by Me, here at Come Together Kids,
I present my own, original Seussian masterpiece...

March 2nd is a special day,
A day to celebrate and play,
Dr. Seuss was born, hooray!

I knew something special
 had to be done,
I went looking around to
 find something fun

My search ended with
 the sweet Natalie,
who blogs over at

She made these fun cat hats,
so cute and so clever,
I thought, "I can do that,
they'll be better than ever."

So I got some white chocolate
and some cookies to dip,
"When my kids see these", I thought,
"they'll most certainly flip!"

I was moving along,
had them all in a line,
but the mistake that I made was
not taking my time.

You see, for the next step,
the dipping in red,
I did not follow the directions,
the sweet Natalie said.

Wait for each end to dry?
I don't need to do that!
I'll rush and I'll hurry
with my hats for a cat!

What happens when you rush,
and don't take your time?
Don't make your own mistakes,
you can learn things from mine!

The warm chocolate will spread
 and get sort of gloppy,
then instead of cute stripes
you'll have nothing but sloppy.

Yes, that's right, those aren't stripes,
they're not straight, they look dumb,
In fact, you can notice
the print from my thumb!

Then instead of dipping, you think,
"I'll just pipe on a line"
Well, I'm here to tell you,
You'll be wasting your time.

You still won't have stripes,
you won't have a straight line,
but that's what happens,
I tell you, when you don't
take your time.

So you may sit and then grumble,
as you look at your mess,
and think, "Now, I've learned,
that I must try my best."

Don't skip steps, don't rush,
don't hurry, don't run,
Take your time, do things right,
then you'll get the job done.

Now, that lesson, though good,
does not mark the end,
because there's one last
tidbit to tell you, my friend.

 The tidbit is this,
it's that children don't mind,
they don't worry, don't care,
if it's not perfect each time.

If there's candy, or chocolate,
or anything sweet,
they'll smile and be happy
and be ready to eat.

That's right, there's my children,
so precious and dear,
when they saw my failed cookies,
they just let out a cheer.

They smiled, they were thrilled,
they ate them with glee.
So my story, filled with failures,
still ends happily!
